Fused glass jewellery designed and made by Debbie
After many years as a teacher, I decided it was time for something new! I've always loved colour and creating things, generally using fabric, but decided to branch out. I went on a half-day fused glass course which was a thoughtful gift from my daughter. It was such fun learning new skills and just being free to create - I wanted more! I decided to focus on dichroic glass jewellery, which was something I have always found myself drawn to buying in craft shops. Another whole day course later and I was hooked! I now work from home in Surbiton, South West London.
The glass jewellery that I make is made by cutting different pieces of glass and layering them in a minimum of two layers. These are then fused together at a high temperature (804 degrees C) in my kiln. Dichroic glass is glass that has a metal oxide coating on it to make it reflect light in lots of different ways. Some of it looks one colour when looked at from one direction and a completely different colour from another direction! Some has different textures, some is multicoloured or patterned. It's very eye-catching and attractive. Some dichroic glass changes colour when it is heated and it can be quite a surprise when you open the kiln to discover a complete transformation has taken place! As each piece of jewellery is cut by hand, using glass with varying colours and shades, each piece is unique and will vary slightly from the photographs. It is also very difficult to take a photograph that fully captures the likeness of a piece because it looks different at different angles. But this is also what makes the jewellery so captivating! I regularly experiment with different glass and methods of fusing, so keep checking my website for new creations!
